In 1805 there was an encampment of Napoleon's army near Austerlitz (near the pyramid of Austerlitz). During this period, Napoleon had a mistress named "Red Mien". He visited them during his stay in the encampment and with whom he also fathered an illegitimate child. At the time, she lived in a sheepfold on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug where Van Morrenbouw is currently converting this monumental building into a home.
The construction shed is a gift to the client, who is also depicted as Napoleon in the painting.
From the encampment at Austerlitz to this sheepfold on the Utrechtse Heuvelrug, it was a fifteen minute ride for Napoleon on horseback… this is where the saying “tief quartertje” comes from..
